Up until this point in our lives living in NYC, our Sundays had been dominated by football and work. At Vintage I had been on the Sunday shift just enough to interrupt our lives and made it hard on both Molly and I to feel like we were living in the city together. The bosses made some changes and I managed to get off all of my Sundays (only to find out I had to work three eleven hour days in a row in order to manage this slight change in schedule).
This was a great improvement, except for the fact that the NFL football season had started and the Broncos were looking like they needed some help (i.e. me perching on a bar stool and yelling at TVs.). Of course anyone who knows Molly knows that she was actually to be found at the bar waiting for me on some days because the Rams played the morning game.
All of this excitement meant that for the entire fall, any Sunday off meant that we were going to hang out in a dank bar. At some point I realized this was not they way that I wanted to spend my year in NYC and I came up with the plan.
As soon as the season was over we would trade off coming up with new places and things to do in the city. The rules were that A.) We were starting at zero. Everything was considered new as of February Fourth. B.) We could only spend a maximum of $10 each. Not including subway costs. C.) No Repeats (Unless it's Pugsleys Pizza, it's that good). I saw this as the opportunity to force us to go out and see all sorts of things that a lot of New Yorkers my take for granted, or just skip cause it's too touristy. Little did I know how hard coming up with new ideas every week is not easy when you don't know where to look for this type of stuff.
So since I came up with the idea, I figured it was natural that I got to go first. Great cool, I knew of something that I had wanted to see since I got here. There are all sorts of references to it in tourist books, and I even had it on good recommendation that this was a fun spot to visit. So I did the research and decided that the Irish Hunger Memorial would be a nice way to start the adventure.
Of course I didn't know that it was going to be 2 degrees with 40 mile an hour winds whipping off of the Hudson river in downtown. We decided to go and from the very beginning I knew it was a bad idea. Molly was frozen, but was being a good sport. There was no subway even near the thing, plus you have to walk by ground zero to get to the memorial. Nice and cheery afternoon my butt. Luckily there was a cafe right near the place so we warmed up there before running a block or so to this little block of rock in the middle of downtown.
To say the least it was not a great idea, but it was a start. These pictures are the only ones I could take because we forgot to charge the batteries in the camera. Oh well.

Molly has just informed me that Football season is over!
From the top of the memorial looking back at the city. That large gap in space on the right, is where the world trade center stood. It would have felt strange except I could not feel my fingers. Oh and no photo of the Hudson because it was too sunny for the camera.
Molly was having a great time!
This was the glamor photo of the day. I asked her to give me a big smile, and I can assure you that under all that she is happy with my choice of destinations. We finally got out of there and walked briskly back to the nearest subway and rode home. A fun day was had by all.
